IL Group Wants Improved Environmental Legislation
Environment Illinois wants the U.S. to learn its lesson and move to more environmentally-friendly federal policies. This is in light of President Obama's speech on the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico .

The group's program director, Max Muller, says it's time Congress passes a comprehensive energy and climate bill. Muller proposes four initiatives:

* Gulf of Mexico communities and ecosystems must be reimbursed for damages, and BP -- not American taxpayers -- must pay for the cleanup.
* Pass a robust set of oil savings policies, especially within the transportation sector, to drastically decrease the nation's demand for oil
* Adopt strong limits on pollution, which are critical to driving the shift to cleaner energy sources
* Unprecedented support renewable energy.

Muller cites Illinois' requirement of 25 percent of utility companies' electricity coming from renewable fuels by 2025 as a model for the nation.
