Sales Tax Holiday Coming in August
Parents could save a little money this summer during back to school shopping. Illinois state lawmakers voted in favor of a sales tax holiday in August.

The bill reduces the amount of sales tax people would have to pay on school supplies, like clothes, computer items, and athletic equipment. Instead of paying the regular 6.25 percent, people would only pay 1.25 percent from Aug. 6 to Aug. 15, 2010.

State Sen. Dan Duffy (R-Lake Barrington) didn't support the measure. He says the state is already in debt and it doesn't make fiscal sense to give up revenue. State Sen. Toi Hutchinson (D-Olympia Fields), however, says parents are struggling to provide for their children’s needs and it's time to give them a break.

Senate Bill 3658 passed both chambers and now heads to the governor's desk.
