Kirk Apologizes for Misstating Record
The Illinois congressman running for U.S. Senate has issued an apology.

U.S. Rep. Mark S. Kirk (R-Highland Park), the Republican candidate for Senate, apologized Tuesday for misstatements he made about his military record.

Speaking to supporters and reporters Tuesday in Northbrook, Kirk says it was a mistake when he said he had earned Navy Intelligence Office of the Year when in fact it was his unit that earned a similar award.

Asked about moving forward, Kirk laid out what he has done.

"Admit the mistakes, own them, take responsibility, fix them, make sure it never happens again," Kirk said.

Kirk says he has released his military record, his official Navy officer fitness reports, which will show what officers above him thought about Kirk's conduct while on duty.

Kirk is running against State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, the Democratic candidate for Senate. Giannoulias' campaign has been using the blunders as a talking point against Kirk.
