District 205 Official Sees Both Good and Bad in New State Learning Standards
A Galesburg School District Administrator says while it's sad the state had to do something the federal government has failed to do, a new set of learning standards for the state's schools are ones he hopes will still be good.

District 205 Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum Joel Estes says the standards, which he received last week and were announced Monday, address three key areas: English, Language Arts, and Math -- replacing standards first crafted in 1997, and are part of a more national effort.

Estes tells WGIL he's been to conferences on the standards, and while it's good to have school districts and states on the same page when it comes to the standards, there are risks.

"This is a very comprehensive document, covering grades K through 12," Estes said. "The math standards themselves are about 95 pages long. You don't just roll that out and say 'Well, here are the standards. Go teach them.' It's going to be a process for school districts to compare them to the old standards, to align curriculum and instruction to those new standards. It's going to take some time."

For District-205, Estes says teachers have been going through a year-long series of training sessions anyway, so the new standards will likely be added on to that somehow.

He says, however, he hopes school districts don't lose sight of the fact that teachers must do more teaching than what's simply in a document.
