Monmouth-Roseville Board Talks More Budget Cuts, Approves Salary Freezes
The Monmouth-Roseville School Board approved two key parts of their budget deficit reduction plan Tuesday night, but the Superintendent wants members to keep thinking about the future.

The District-238 board voted to approve a new one-year contract with the Monmouth-Roseville Education Association that freezes the salaries of all teachers in the district. And, they approved salary freezes for all administrators except for one, who had to be given a raise for moving up to a building principal position.

But Superintendent Paul Woehlke asked the board to do some thinking on two questions.

"One is, on the financial side, what level of debt, if any, does the Board wish to take the district into to survive, to continue to survive as a district?" Woehlke asked. "On the educational side, the question is how deep, or to what extent, is the board prepared to make educational program cuts in order to avoid passing that financial limit?"

Board members agreed that none of them wanted to go into any debt at all if possible, and that there should be an ongoing discussion about the budget, and how to keep addressing that, which will become part of a strategic plan that teachers and possibly the public will be asked to participate in.

The District-238 board Tuesday night also agreed to hold off until September making a decision on whether or not to sell the now-shuttered Roseville Elementary and Willits Primary School buildings.
