| District 205 Board Approves County Sales Tax Referendum Question |
It apparently took less than two minutes for members of the Galesburg School Board to change their minds on whether they wanted to support an effort to ask voters to increase the county sales tax.
The District-205 Board took a special meeting that lasted a minute and a half Wednesday night to approve sending to the Knox County Board a question for the November election ballot asking for a sales tax increase that, by law, can pay for construction-related projects for every school in Knox County.
The board two weeks ago tabled the matter, but board president Deborah Harrison tells WGIL she doesn't really know why members changed their minds.
"Some of the opposition I've heard just wasn't here [Wednesday] night," Harrison said. "There's a couple board members missing [from the meeting]. So, I can't speak for them."
Board members Gloria Osborn and Robert Lindstrom weren't at the meeting, though Lindstrom participated by phone, and voted "yes."
"The board has been very diligent in their consideration, and very thoughtful and careful," Dr. Gene Denisar, District 205 Superintendent, said. "We're anxious to move forward. We'll prepare for the next step, which is to get this before the [Knox County Board]."
All school districts in Knox County except Williamsfield support a proposed one-cent increase in the tax, a relatively new way for districts to pay for construction work.
It's said Knox County Board Chair Greg Bacon supports such a ballot question. It'll be before the board next month. |
