Moffitt Bill Increasing EMT Requirements on Governor's Desk
The state budget might not have been favorable during last week's legislative session, but a local lawmaker says he was able to get another bill passed he says he worked all Spring on.

State Representative Don Moffitt says lawmakers passed legislation that creates minimum standards for the transportation by ambulance of patients needing critical care -- something Moffitt says is in place for helicopter transport, but not for ambulances.

But Moffitt tells WGIL another facet of the bill would target ambulance drivers that may be certain types of convicted felons.

"This will give -- once the bill is signed and becomes law -- the Department Public Health the ability to revoke a license if they're convicted... a convicted sex offender," Moffitt said. "It improves the safety for people -- especially children."

Moffitt says there are only a few convicted sex offenders that are EMT's in the state -- none in this area.

For the more part, he says a number of agencies and lobby groups supported the bill, and says from what he had heard, the Galesburg Hospitals Ambulance Service supported House Bill 5183 as well.

If signed into law, it would take effect January first.
