Bill Would Allow Early Voting on College Campuses
Ballot access or political pandering? A bill which has passed the Illinois General Assembly is a pilot program requiring counties to implement early voting sites on college campuses. But it also generated a lot of partisan debate.

State Rep. Elaine Nekritz (D-Northbrook), the sponsor, says the idea is to get college-age Illinoisans interested in the process. But State Rep. David Reis (R-Sainte Marie) said, "This is one more chance to try to beef up the numbers for Democrat votes." State Rep. John Fritchey (D-Chicago) responded, "If most of these campuses tended to skew politically toward the philosophy of those people that are opposing this bill, those people would magically become proponents of this bill."

State Rep. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) challenged Nekritz to state which employees the Charleston and Champaign County clerks' offices should lay off in order to set up early voting on campus, and State Rep. Bill Black (R-Danville) suggested the bill discriminates against people who do not live near college campuses.

S.B. 3012 has passed both chambers and awaits the governor's action.
