Document on Mary Todd Lincoln to Be Auctioned
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Documents relating to the arrest of Mary Todd Lincoln and her placement in an Illinois insane asylum are headed to auction this month.

Lincoln was involuntarily committed to Bellevue Place in 1875, a decade after her husband's assassination.

The Courier-Journal of Louisville reports that the yellowed documents were found by the asylum owner's daughter in 1933, but sat in a desk drawer for about 60 years after that.

Now, after the death of the woman who found them, Dorthey Daniels of Louisville, the documents are coming to public light and are slated for auction June 11. Historians say the rare papers illustrate a controversial episode in the Lincoln family history -- the commitment of Mary Lincoln to an asylum by her son, Robert Lincoln.
