Streator Among Towns Cleaning Up After Saturday's Tornadoes
Cleanup has started in Streator after a tornado ripped through the city Saturday night just before 9 p.m.

Mayor Jimmy Lansford says initial assessments show the tornado damaged 117 structures, many of them homes and businesses. Of those, 35 are said to have major damage.

A total of 50 people were treated at area hospitals and released. There were no fatalities.

According the LaSalle Country Emergency Operations Center, crews were out assessing damage Monday and hope to have damage assessments for the entire county by Tuesday.

Lansford says what the city needs now is "fair weather." He's worried that thunderstorms predicted for the area will slow cleanup efforts.

Meanwhile, City Manager Paul Nicholson is warning residents to beware of con artists and home repair scams. He says the city will be issuing identification to every outside business that comes to the town looking for work in hopes of preventing rip-offs.

According to the National Weather Service in Romeoville, there were seven tornadoes reported Saturday night. Towns affected include Streator, Dwight and St. Anne in Kankakee County. Gov. Pat Quinn toured some of the damage Monday. Lansford says the city will apply for state assistance.
