Environmentalists Oppose Portion of Federal Oil Bill
Environmentalists are opposing a provision coming up for a vote in the U.S. Senate that figures to cost Illinoisans money.

At issue is a resolution that would block the clean car standards set earlier this year which require decreased gasoline consumption for cars and light trucks by 2016.

The group Environment Illinois says the cost to Illinoisans is $44 million more for gasoline, and the use of 17 million more gallons in 2016 than they would consume if the fuel economy standards remain in place.

Program director Max Muller expects a close vote in the Senate on Thursday. U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Roland W. Burris (D-Ill.) are against the resolution. Muller is urging them to push fence-sitting senators to the "no" side.

The resolution, sponsored by U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), is being offered under the Congressional Review Act, which allows Congress to roll back regulations it does not like. Supporters say the Environmental Protection Agency has too much regulatory power under the Clean Air Act, and that power should be limited and defined by statute.
