Caring by Cleaning Up
The Knox County United Way hopes to make a difference, and let people know outside Galesburg that the agency is there for them, too.

The United Way hosted its first "Day of Caring" in some time Saturday, doing clean-up work in Abingdon at Rotary Park, and at the park in Altona.

The work in Altona is something village president Sally Keener tells WGIL she's grateful for.

"It's great help," Keener said. "We don't have...not able to coordinate volunteers lots of times, because everybody works. Everybody has their own things to do."

United Way Executive Director Ann Tucker tells WGIL it means a lot for the United Way to be able to do this -- at the very least in terms of spreading their message.

"The main reason we're in Altona and in Abingdon is to get out of Galesburg," Tucker said. "To let people know we care about all of Knox County, that it's not just Galesburg, and to show the community what the United Way is all about."

Tucker says while many of the partner agencies the United Way serves are indeed based in Galesburg, people are helped in every Knox County community.

She says she hopes the Day of Caring will become an annual or twice-annually event.
