Civil War Flag Now in Springfield
(IRN)-A flag carried by Illinois soldiers during the Civil War has been preserved and is on display at the Old State Capitol in Springfield. You can see it on the south side of the rotunda, outside the adjutant general’s office, between now and the end of the Civil War sesquicentennial -- that is, until 2015.

The flag is normally part of the collection at the Illinois State Military Museum at Camp Lincoln in Springfield. Lt. Col. Mark Whitlock, the museum's director, says New York flag experts, specialists in preserving Civil War flags, did the work. The flag measures six feet by six feet and is in a frame that is seven feet by seven feet.

Maj. Gen William Enyart, the adjutant general of Illinois, says the $40,000 needed for the project was donated by people from Boone and McHenry Counties, whose soldiers were in the unit which carried that flag.
