West Nile Located in Illinois
(IRN)-West Nile virus is back.

The Illinois Department of Public Health says a mosquito sample collected in Tazewell County has been confirmed as the first positive West Nile virus test results in Illinois this year. The Tazewell County Health Department collected the positive mosquito batch in Delavan on Friday (June 10). Monitoring for West Nile virus began on May 1.

Last year, 30 of the state's 102 counties were found to have a West Nile positive bird, mosquito, horse or human case. A total of 61 human cases of West Nile disease were reported in Illinois last year, the first reported on Aug. 31.

Public Health spokeswoman Melaney Arnold says homeowners should eliminate stagnant water, as that is where the mosquitos carrying West Nile breed. The use of insect repellant containing DEET should be used in combination with long sleeve shirts and long pants.

Citizens who observe a sick or dying crow, blue jay, robin or other perching bird should contact their local health department, which will determine if the bird will be picked up and tested for West Nile.
