| Cairo Gets Disaster Help |
(IRN)-A disaster recovery center is opening Wednesday in Cairo.
The state and federal emergency management agencies are opening the center for residents of 21 Southern Illinois counties that are officially disaster areas due to last month's flood. People who have sustained property damage and applied for benefits can check in, says FEMA spokesman Sam Ventura. "It's a temporary center to help Southern Illinois' people who were affected by the flooding to meet face to face with recovery specialists and other people that they can talk to for any other information," he said.
The government is making available low interest disaster loans for homeowners, renters, businesses and private non profit organizations to repair or replace real estate, contents and personal property.
Residents of the following counties are eligible for individual assistance: Alexander, Franklin, Gallatin, Hardin, Jackson, Lawrence, Massac, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, Randolph, Saline, White and Williamson.
Those seeking help should apply first, either on-line at www.sba.gov/services/disasterassistance or by phone at 800-659-2955.
The center is located at Emerson Elementary School, 3101 Elm St. in Cairo. Hours are 9 a.m.-7 p.m. daily (including weekends) through June 21, and 9 a.m.-7 p.m. daily (including weekends and July 4) from June 29-July 6.
Another disaster recovery center will open on Thursday in Junction at Gallatin School, 5175 Route 13.
