No Change in Liquor License Fees for Now
The newly-constituted Galesburg Liquor Advisory Commission says there should be no changes to the liquor license structure for now.

The commission made the recommendation at their meeting Monday. Members had been mulling the idea of lowering the fees and consolidating classifications, just two years after they had been raised for the first time in a quarter-century, but instead implement sub-classes for various bar amenities like beer gardens.

Commission member and business owner Diane Budde says maybe fees should be raised some other time, but not now.

"I'd rather see it stay how it is now, then make changes, and maybe put a moratorium on raising it for a certain amount of time since we have raised it so much already, which what you're not dealing with is scarier than what you are dealing with now."

Committee Chairperson Carol Dawkins estimates the city would lose about $27,000 a year if the fees were lowered.

Mayor Sal Garza suggested the state may be looking to raise alcohol taxes as it deals with the budget deficit.

The most expensive liquor license, a Class "A", went in 2009 from just over $21,000, to $27,000.
