Tourism Council Ponders More Hotels
Is there more room at the inn, so to speak? That's what the Knox County Tourism Council could find out.

It was learned at Tuesday's Tourism Council meeting that overnight hotel stays in Galesburg have been on an upward trend in recent months, according to the Galesburg Lodging and Restaurant Association, which prompted a suggestion that the city needs another motel.

Mayor Sal Garza asked GLRA president and Holiday Inn Express Manager Ryan Cochran what would be standard in hotel-building these days.

"Most of your good brands now-a-days, they require you have at least 70 rooms or 75 rooms, you can't build a Holiday Inn Express now without at least 75 rooms or something in that ballpark of 75 rooms would be my guess."

Tourism Council members say the number of available hotel rooms in Galesburg has gone from around 800 rooms in the recent past, to just under 500 now, due to various demolitions and the fire in 2009 that destroyed the EconoInn.

Garza says there have been firms in the past interested in building a hotel in Galesburg, and suggested some sort of meeting in the future to talk about the issue further.
