Illinois One of First States to Try Change in Federal School Lunch Program
(IRN)-More Illinois school kids will get a free lunch when school resumes in the fall, under the phase in of a new federal program.

Under the Healthy, Hunger free Kids Act signed last year, schools in high poverty areas will have free lunch and breakfast available to all students in all states by the 2014-15 school year. That part of the program is being phased in with Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee being the three states starting this fall.

Mary Fergus, a spokeswoman for the Illinois State Board of Education, says schools with 40 percent of the students qualifying for free or reduced price lunch will be able to provide free lunch for all, and without as much paper work. She says school districts wanting more information can contact the State Board.
