Politicians Ban from State Funded Billboards
(IRN)-Politicians can no longer use taxpayer-funded billboards or electronic signs to promote themselves.

A new law signed by the governor adds billboards and electronic signs to the list of media from which politicians were already banned from using their name, voice or picture: Radio, television and print periodicals. State Rep. Chris Nybo, who sponsored the measure, says state programs will have to speak for themselves.

"There's very meritorious programs and services that we provide in the state of Illinois, and we should be promoting those programs, but we shouldn't be promoting the politicians. I think that's what this bill is about," he said at an Illinois Tollway maintenance yard in Hillside, where the governor signed the bill into law.

The law was inspired by ex-Governor Rod Blagojevich, who put his name on open-road tolling signs in 32 locations on the Illinois Tollway in 2006.

S.B. 1344 was also sponsored by State Sen. Matt Murphy (R-Palatine) and was broadly supported by lawmakers of both parties in Springfield.
