Danville Ministers Oppose Proposed Casino
(IRN) -- Some ministers in Danville are taking issue with the mayor over his strong support for a casino.

The ministers commend Mayor Scott Eisenhauer for some recent successes in bringing new retail and manufacturing jobs to the community, but they says a casino is a big problem.

The Rev. Randy Downing, pastor of the Rock Church in Danville, says there are better alternatives for economic development. "We believe that by training our workforce, we're gonna invite companies to come to Danville when they realize Danville has a workforce that is trained and ready to go," he said at a rally with a dozen ministers.

The Rev. Chad St. John, associate pastor at the South Side Church of the Nazarene, says a casino will be a blemish on the legacy that the current powers-that-be in Danville leave to the next generation.

The pastors have launched a petition drive against a casino, asking the governor to veto legislation. Supporters are working the governor too, noting that a casino would bring substantial private investment to Danville.

The legislation the governor is considering calls for new casinos in Danville, Chicago, the south suburbs, Park City (near Waukegan) and Rockford, more gambling positions at existing casinos, and slot machines at race tracks and the Chicago airports. Gov. Pat Quinn has characterized the legislation as "excessive," but has yet to decide what to do with it.
