Report: Schools Below Good Vaccination Levels
CHICAGO (AP) -- The number of Illinois public and private schools with immunization rates below a state-recommended level is rising.

The Illinois Department of Public Health recommends a 90 percent vaccination rate to prevent outbreaks of measles, mumps, rubella, polio and diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis.

The Chicago Tribune reported Sunday that about 200 Illinois schools last year were below that recommended level for at least one of those immunizations. And, an analysis of state data shows the number has grown.

The newspaper reports the number of schools below the recommended level for polio has risen from 27 in 2003 to 122 last year. The number of schools below the level for measles vaccinations grew from 31 schools to 124 during the same time period.

The missing vaccinations are sometimes due to parents seeking religious exemptions.
