Alderman Questions Farmers' Market Operation
A Galesburg alderman says a farmers market operated locally may not be doing what it's supposed to.

The City Council met for the second day of a two-day goal setting session saturday at Knox College, which is where Fifth Ward Alderman Peter Schwartzman questioned the downtown Farmers Market, which is run by the Galesburg Business Association.

Specifically, Schwartzman took issue with the money being collected there -- which he says is $15 per week per vendor -- and where it's going.

"Supposedly, that money is to pay for advertising...and amplifying the market. It is not doing so," Schwartzman said. "I've heard this personally and also from the Health Department head Heidi Britton. They've had conversations with the head of the GBA, and without any reluctance, the gentleman said "we need to use this money as we need to use it."

Schwartzman says the fees charged, what's more, are more than in Peoria and the Quad Cities, and with high gas prices, it's not worth it for many vendors to set up shop here.

Aldermen, however, didn't want to discount what they say is the other great work the GBA does for the downtown area and local businesses.
