Remains Found in 1996 Not Tied to Woman Last Seen in 1970
UPDATED 4:12pm 6/20/11 A woman the Knox County Sheriffs Department says had ties to the county and was last seen here in 1970, is not tied to skeletal remains found in the East Galesburg Brickyards in 1996.

Sheriffs Department Sergeant Jason Landers says DNA testing done for the FBI through the Minnesota Department of Public Safety does not connect the remains to Lula Cora Hood as was initially thought.

Landers tells WGIL the case had long been closed until family members recently asked for a new look.

"At that time [in 1996], the DNA testing was not to the point where they could get a DNA profile off these remains," Landers said. "About two years ago, the family [of Hood] came forward, and wanted to have a DNA test done to conclusively show that this was their relative, Lula Cora Hood."

Landers says DNA samples were taken from a daughter and a sister to try and determine if a match could be made. Now, Landers says investigators have two jobs on their hands: figure out just who the remains could be if they're not Hood, and where Hood could be.

Landers says his department will release information about the case periodically over the next couple weeks to try and spur public interest.

Anyone with information can call the Knox County Sheriffs Department, or the Galesburg-Area CrimeStoppers Hotline.
