Man Injured After Being Hit By Train
A Galesburg man is hospitalized after he was hit by a freight train early this Monday morning.

Galesburg Police reports indicate officers were called to a crossing near the Knox College football field, in the area of the seven-hundred block of South Cedar Street, around 2:20 am.

Officers say a man later identified as 19-year old Malcom Coon was laying on the tracks.

He told police that he saw the gates go down and the train coming, and thought he could cross before the train got there.

Coon told officers he underestimated the train's speed, and that's how he got hit.

The train's engineer told officers that he never saw a pedestrian, but did hear something hit the train, causing the stop.

Coon was taken to a Galesburg hospital initially for treatment, but later was transferred to Methodist Medical Center in Peoria.

Coon's condition isn't available, but police say his broken arm, bleeding from his head, and leg injuries are not life-threatening.
