City Council Approves Money for Building Renovations
The Galesburg City Council has given its blessing to a businessman's plan to renovate a downtown retail building.

Aldermen Monday night unanimously voted to provide $250,000 in Tax Increment Financing District money to Mark Kleine that will be used to renovate 246 East Main Street.

Kleine says he's got a lot of plans for what will be a project that's close to a million dollars in cost.

"MAK Properties came about because we're genuinely interested in giving back to the community, by helping to continue downtown development," Kleine said. "In the past six months, MAK Properties has purchased four buildings in downtown Galesburg, all with the intention of some type of redevelopment."

The first $125,000 in TIF money will be given to Kleine up front, with the rest being paid out over time. Aldermen also approved a transfer of funds from one TIF district to another in order to have enough money for the plan.

They say that's permissable under state law.

Aldermen Monday night also approved an increase in size for residential accessory structures like garages, but did not increase the setback to five-feet, instead keeping it at three feet.
