Knoxville Closes Campus
The long-running privilege of Knoxville High School students to leave campus at lunch-time is now officially over.

The District-202 School Board Monday night voted to end the "open campus" policy at KHS, and Superintendent Stephen Wilder says the lunch period will be changed accordingly so that every student can be served.

Wilder tells WGIL simply put, the district can't keep students safe if they're not on campus at any point during the school day.

"We had some concern about the students being out in the community during school hours, particularly during the lunch hour," Wilder said. "Our responsibility is to supervise those students effectively, and it's difficult to do that when they're off of school grounds. One of the things we talked about was really closing campus, in an efforts to keep a closer eye of students and live up to that responsibility."

Wilder says no major issues came up during open campus lunch in the just-ended school year, but it's a problem Wilder and his predecessor have dealt with for a long time, even though he says he's just being proactive.

The District-202 Board Monday night voted to hire Matt Graham as Knoxville Junior High School principal, replacing Chris Lensing. Graham, who's most recently worked in a school district near Springfield, will make $72,000 a year.
