Aldermen Approve Bigger Garages
The Galesburg City Council has approved essentially what could be described as larger garages being built, but not with a caveat that the city's planning and zoning commission wanted.

Aldermen Monday voted six-to-two to double the maximum allowable size of garages and accessory structures to two-thousand square feet, going along with a Commission recommendation to that end.

But Sixth Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin was one of the two "no" votes, saying most garages being built aren't that large anyway.

"If these events are such infrequent occurrences, then, certainly we should be given oversight over whether or not they're approved," Karlin said. "I question whether or not such large buildings -- 2,000 square feet -- and the need for those are consistent with a residential areas in which they would be built."

But other aldermen suggested that the change was consistent with something aldermen talked at length about at their recent goal-setting workshop: making the city more user-friendly.

The City Council did vote to leave the setback distance from the property line at three-feet, rejecting a five-foot setback.
