A Plea for Help to Graduates of Stone-Hayes Prgram
FIRST REPORTED 5:29am 6/23/11 For lack of a better term, the latest crop of graduates from a program that teaches them how to be advocates for the disabled couldn't have finished their studies at a better time.

Nine people were honored Wednesday for being part of the Legislative Internship Program at the Stone-Hayes Center for Independent Living.

The nine went through training, meetings with lawmakers, and other activities in hopes they'll continue to advocate for the disabled and Centers for Independent Living.

Stone-Hayes Associate Director Vanya Peterson says it didn't take long for the graduates' help to be very much needed, thanks to the ongoing state budget debacle.

"We just received word (on Tuesday) that Centers for Independent Living, aren't being paid (by the state) right now. No payments will be going to Centers for Independent Living at this point," Peterson said.

Peterson was referring to calling legislators and the Governor's office to urge that funding be restored.

Peterson also urged the graduates to make time to also make those calls.
