3 CSC Health Programs to Make Associates Degrees Available
Several fields of study at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg could soon become programs for which students can get an actual degree.

The CSC Board of Trustees Thursday night voted to approve of plans to make make programs in the Applied Science fields of Cosmetology, Theraputic Massage, and Medical Assisting degree programs in addition to certificate programs, if the Illinois Community College Board gives its final approval.

CSC Dean of Allied Health Lauri Weichman tells WGIL the difference would mean taking some general education courses along with other appropriate coursework, but there's an even bigger difference than that.

"Many of our advisory committee members indicated that they would actually hire someone that had an Associate of Applied Science Degree over somebody who had a certificate degree," Weichman said, "because it shows they had integrity and they had that desire to go above and beyond what the minimum expectations were."

Weichman says she already has a number of students that are interested in coming back to CSC and take the courses needed in order to upgrade their certificates to Associates Degrees.

The CSC Board Thursday night also approved of a plan to expand an enterprise zone in Bushnell that, with it being a part of the CSC district, they had to either approve or reject.
