Library Board Urges Fundraising to Begin
Some members of the Galesburg Public Library Board think the year old Galesburg Public Library Foundation needs to start fundraising efforts sooner rather than later.

The Library Board heard at their meeting Thursday that the Foundation Board wants to hold a joint meeting in July to discuss the library's future, specifically, the library's location, as efforts to find an ideal site for a library continue, even though the area of the former Super 8 on West Main Street seems to be the consensus for now.

Library Board Treasurer Mike Kroll says it's time for the foundation to increase their workload.

"It doesn't have to be a specific program for a new library or anything else, but I'd like to see the foundation begin actually soliciting funds and start moving toward that direction and to get a higher profile in the community by actually doing something like that."

Wendel Hunigan sits on both the foundation and library boards and says that's exactly why a joint meeting is needed.

He says the two sides need to figure out what expectations they have for each other.

The foundation has $2.5 million in its investment portfolio, and is considering hiring a fund manager to deal with that. Hunigan says that's way out of the scope of anyone on the foundation.
