Bath Salt Ban in Illinois
(IRN)-Illinois lawmakers are sending a bill to the governor that would outlaw 10 synthetic substances being used as hallucinogenic drugs, one of which is currently being sold legally in Illinois and has led to at least one death.

In April, an Alton woman died of an overdose after buying one of the one ounce packages sold in convenience stores for $60. The drug is labeled as bath salts, but no one is using them to get clean.

Snorting or smoking the drug provides the user with a hallucinogenic high akin to the effects of ecstasy or methamphetamines.

"This is a hallucinogenic drug, with little blue people chasing them, hair on fire, insects chasing them," said the bill's sponsor, State Representative Wayne Rosenthal (R-Morrisonville). "So it's a hallucinogenic that goes back to the LSD-types in the 60s."

Last year, Illinois banned K2, a synthetic drug that was bought and smoked legally to achieve a feeling similar to a marijuana high. State lawmakers throughout the U.S. have had to keep up with banning synthetic substances like K2 or bath salts before manufacturers come up with a new strain that has not yet been banned.

The bill is HB 2089.
