May in Illinois was Wetter Than Usual
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- April showers are supposed to give way to May flowers. But In Illinois this year, April showers gave way to more May showers.

That's the word from the Illinois State Water Survey, which reports in a news release on Monday that it rained 5.6 inches in May. That's about 1.3 inches above the average.

Add the 2.3 inches of rain that fell in March and the 7.3 that fell in April and the total for the spring was 15.7 inches, making this spring the seventh wettest since 1895 and 4.3 inches above average.

State Climatologist Jim Angel says the spring rainfall totals were the highest in the southern end of the state, with Cairo the wettest community with 30.90 inches of rain.
