Bunker Links Golf Pro Approved
FIRST REPORTED 5:30am 6/7/11 City council members have had a change of heart of sorts when it comes to who runs the city's Bunker Links Golf Course.

Galesburg alderman approved a three year contract for Golf Pro Greg Merrill Monday night by a vote of six to two.

Seventh Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin says it's a good move.

"It seems to me that Mr. Merrill has been doing the job at the golf course for a number of years in an exemplary fashion. It would be foolish now to say, 'Well, we want to nickel and dime Mr. Merrill to see if we can get a better deal for the city,' I mean frankly I think that's not the way to go."

But Mayor Sal Garza says it never hurts to take a second look.

"It's always a good idea to go back and reaccess any and all agreements to see if we are getting the very most that we can. It's also understandable that we're going to try to get every facet of the city operations to be as efficient and to try to maintain the same level of effectiveness."

Merrill was to have his $33,000 a year contract renewed in November but council members wanted to look into other options, so a one year contract was agreed upon.

Merrill's new contract is exactly the same as before and he was the only person to respond to the proposal request.
