Knoxville Mayor Resigns
FIRST REPORTED 5:30am 6/7/11 The mayor of Knoxville says he's leaving the city in a better place then when he first became an alderman over a decade ago.

Terry Pool announced at the end of Monday night's City Council meeting that he was resigning his post as of noon on Friday, leaving Mayor Pro Tem Bernadine Fleisher to take the helm for now.

Pool tells WGIL he's leaving the state, and re-joining his wife.

"I have a job in Florida and will be relocating to Florida. My wife has been there for some time and it's really kind of a bittersweet thing, I finally get to be down there with her but I really hate to leave Knoxville and my employment at Cottage."

Pool says the job he found in Florida is similar to his current role at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.

Pool tells WGIL he's proud of what the city has accomplished in nine years as aldermen, then two years as mayor.

"Getting the water line to Galesburg was a big accomplishment, having our first city administrator, full time administrator, was a big accomplishment, just bringing the council together with everyone, working together now, working with the school, it's been very rewarding."

Pool says after he resigns on Friday, he'll move on Saturday.

Fleisher's role as mayor could be temporary. City officials say the council will have to elect a council member as mayor, who could they also retain their role as alderman if they so choose.
