Two Congressman Advocate for Veterans Health Care
Two local lawmakers are working in Congress to get veterans who might live in rural areas better health care.

Congressman Bobby Schilling and Aaron Schock are supporting an amendment to a bill that would allow 16 million dollars to expand two programs allowing veterans access to covered health care services through certain health care providers.

Schock says it will help both recent veterans and those who've been in much earlier wars, and will help address a possible strain in health care services going on.

"We have a huge number of veterans returning in the last decade, moreso than any time we've been at war," Schock said. "And as a result, it has put a huge amount of burden and strain on veterans clinics, veterans hospitals, and veterans program services-- because they have traditions of taking care of the aged population."

The measure essentially allows non-Department of Veterans Affairs health care providers to provide the services through two programs, especially in rural areas.

Schock and Schilling are co-sponsoring the measure. It has yet to receive a vote.
