Crops Still Stressed by Lack of Rain
There was some rain in the area Monday, but not enough to help the local corn crop along.

That's according to local agronomist Lance Tarchione, who says a recent rain was stretched out as long as it could in terms of help it gave to local fields, so missing most of the rain this time will leave fields, in his words, "pretty stressed."

Tarchione tells the WGIL Mid-Day corn planted in late-March or early April might be doing better than late-planted corn.

"Had quite an advantage when it came to getting its roots established, was able to get rooted down before it got dry, and it's handling the stress a lot better," he said. "Now conversely, it's pretty close to tasseling, some of this corn-- if it doesn't slow its growth too much due to the dry weather-- we'll be seeing some tassels on this early planted stuff probably within the next ten days."

Tarchione says, though, some moisture will be needed for that corn soon as it gets ready for pollination.

Later-planted crops, he says is worse visually but is farther-away from pollination, so it has yet to be seen which crop really will fare better.
