Alderman Wants Manufacturer to Move from Property
A Galesburg alderman who has caught either praise or heat for his stance on whether or not a local manufacturer should get the re-zoning it wants says the business in question should move.

5th Ward Alderman Peter Schwartzman suggested last week that Aluminum Castings not get the re-zoning it wants so it can increase manufacturing at its Kellogg and South Street location, in part, because of environmental concerns and how much he claims emissions from the plant permeate downtown -- something many we talked to say they hardly ever notice.

Schwartzman issued a press release Monday that Aluminum Castings should be given help to find a place in town already zoned for heavy manufacturing. He told the WGIL Evening News Friday he just wants to help a business that many have said is a good member of the community.

"This entity is an important contributor (and) positive contributor to our city," he said. As far as I know, all I've heard thus far, (is) they are good neighbors, they don't have any violations, (and) most people don't even know they exist-- which I guess is a good thing in this case."

Problem is, Mayor Sal Garza told aldermen last week, confirmed by the company, that the city has already tried to get Aluminum Castings to move, and they've said they would rather improve the property they already have.

Company president Brett Markum has said the company could move out of town if they don't get the re-zoning they want. Their parent company is based in Peoria.
