District-217 Officials Fearful of Future Finances
Abingdon School District officials are already grimacing at how their surplus from the fiscal year will need to stop the bleeding of next year's budget.

Superintendent David Black informed the District-217 Board of Education Wenesday night they're currently $583,000-dollars in the black for the 2011-2012 fiscal year. The board approved an amendment to reflect the total.

But Black says the fiscal 2013 year may feature the district having to pay more for employees' health care benefits because of federally-mandated increases.

"It's going to be 6.6% for the $750 deductible, single coverage," Black said. "For dependent coverages, it's probably going to go up 8%. So if someone takes family insurance for example, it's probably going to go up 8%."

"That is all dependent on the supreme court ruling. If they overturn it, it changes the game."

What's more, Black says there's been a four-percent increase in a recently-approved budget by their special-education co-op. He says also General State-Aid has been pro-rated an extra six-percent, down to eighty-nine percent now.

Thus far in fiscal 2012, the district has expended $4.97 million dollars while generating revenues above $5.56 million dollars.
