City Optimistic for On-time Overpass Completion
Galesburg's City Engineer says crews are now officially in the final stages of building the West Main Street overpass.

Wayne Carl told the WGIL Morning News today he's certain that the overpass will soon be complete, due in part to the nearly ideal weather conditions that crews have had almost since construction began last year.

Carl says he wasn't so sure at the beginning that the end would come when it likely will.

"We got a little bit later start on it last year then I had hoped when we started it-- in July is when we let it out for bids," Carl said. "But all in all, I think the contractor is on schedule and we're still planning on having it complete by the last week of September."

Carl says two-thirds of the beams for the bridge have been set, with the rest being set next week, then concrete for the bridge and the area leading up to it will be set.

Carl says, by the way, crews didn't lose a lot of time because of last week's nearby Hawkinson Manufacturing fire. He says ash landed on many of the workers' vehicles, and there was concern over smoke for a time, but the fire otherwise caused no major problems.
