Local Unemployment Figures Show Decline in Galesburg
Figures provided by the Illinois Department of Employment Security show the city of Galesburg's unemployment rate fell in May.

Not seasonally adjusted rates show a dip of point-two-percent to seven-point-seven percent from April to May. Last May, Galesburg unemployment was at eight-point-three-percent-- meaning there's a decrease of point-six-percent this year.

IDES indicates year-to-year decreases for Knox and Warren Counties as well. For Knox, unemployment is down point-three-percent to seven-point-three-percent. In Warren, not-seasonally adjusted numbers reflect a change of point-one-percent-- down to six-point-five-percent last month. Month-to-month, however, Warren County's unemployment rate increased slightly.

May's Galesburg-Area unemployment, or combined Knox and Warren County rate, fell point-two-percent to seven-point-one percent from year-to-year. It's the twenty-third consecutive month the rate has been at or below the year-ago rate. According to IDES, that's unchanged from April to May.

Despite the steady improvement in unemployment, non-farm payroll and government jobs declined for the Galesburg-Area from May 2011 to May of this year. Financial activities increased year-to-year.

Other area unemployment rates saw declines on a month-to-month basis, with the exception of Henry County, which saw its rate increase to seven-point-two percent.
