Rail Photos Part of This Year's Railroad Days
The annual festival celebrating probably the most important piece of Galesburg history has a lot that's new this year, including an important step for a local organization.

The National Railroad Hall of Fame, in addition to its annual induction ceremony taking place Saturday, will have a pair of exhibits on display in what Executive Director Julie King calls the first of many educational programs that will be provided to the community.

King tells WGIL one of the exhibits will be a collection of photos inductee John Walker Barriger collected and took over the years.

"Part of Mr. Barriger's collection includes an extensive series of photographs he took as head of the railroad division of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation during the Roosevelt administration," King said. "These are basically 1930's photographs. I think the earliest one in our collection is 1917. There may be one or two that go into the 1940's."

King describes the photos from being in an era where there wasn't an avid community of fans of the railroad, making the Barriger collection unique.

That display will be available in Knox College's Ford Center for the Fine Arts Saturday and Sunday starting at 10am.

The National Railroad Hall of Fame also has a display of photographs from the Center for Railroad Photography and Art that will be open to the public during the same time frame at "The Box" on Kellogg Street near the Knox County Jail.
