Abingdon Mayor Wants Criteria for Memorial Wall
A remembrance of sorts for Abingdon locals to honor individual contributions or personal attachments in the community doesn't carry any specific requirements for families to memorialize their loved ones.

Mayor Roger Stegall wants to change that, especially now that the Memorial Wall across from the high school has been re-constructed. Before last week's finishing touches, he says the collection was tacky and the plaques weren't well organized.

"It was awful," Stegall said. "So we took them all down, and re-did the wall. And then I got Kenny Pickrel-- he volunteered to come and re-do those plaques, lay them down and put them up."

"We need a procedure for putting the memorial plaques up at the ballpark."

Stegall recently challenged First-Ward Alderman Shane Peterson to find a solution so the city isn't just allowing any plaque to be mounted to the wall. Peterson heads the Parks Committee on the Abingdon City Council.

Peterson has already replaced two plaques to be mounted on the Memorial Wall that went missing from the dugout at the baseball field-- costing upwards of $250-dollars for the city.
