Galesburg School Board Adopts Tentative Budget for Next Fiscal Year
A tentative and unbalanced budget for the next fiscal year was adopted by the District-205 Board of Education Monday night.

Assistant Superintendent Guy Cahill says general state-aid is expected to be pro-rated for a second straight year-- this time at 89-percent. That's roughly $1.8 million dollars less than what's being provided this fiscal year.

With a $682,000 deficit budgeted for the Educational Fund in Fiscal 2012-2013, Cahill was asked, "What do we do?"

"We could take the approach of cut, cut, cut and get it in line," Cahill said. "And so on the one hand, you can be looking at the simple (or) not so simple (solution). A big target is a building, the closure of a building because enrollments are down."

"We're down 100 hundred students-- it's the second (or) third year in a row. So that's an easy target."

Cahill says another option would be to grow and make the district more attractive to families. He says adding two-hundred students would generate a one million dollar swing in the "ed-fund"-- equaling a $400,000-dollar surplus.

A board policy requiring a balanced budget was suspended Monday evening to adopt the tentative budget. It next goes before the public at a September hearing.
