Major Projects Nearing Completion at Affordable Housing Sites
It's been an exciting time for Brentwood Manor and Prairieland Townhouse Apartments.

That's according to Mary Pendry, manager of twenty-plus years for the affordable housing sites in Galesburg. She explained to the Board of Commissioners at Tuesday's Knox County Housing Authority meeting that work is either complete or almost done to retrofit both sites of more energy efficient materials.

One phase of upgrades falls under a Weatherization contract with the Carver Community Action Agency.

"That was a zero cost for us," she said. "The other program ended up-- I kind of figured it up a little bit, have some numbers-- I think really when it was all said and done we ended up spending less than $500 out of pocket for the other program, other than a lot of time and energy."

That program was through a grant implemented by the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Replaced under both grants were furnaces, water heaters, windows, doors, and some installing of insulation-- totaling almost $250,000.

In other news, ceiling fans will be installed in each den for tenants at Abingdon's Blue Bell Tower. The Board of Commissioners Tuesday voted to approve a bid of $21,580 from Keith Electric in Farmington to move ahead with the work. Fans were only added to the bedrooms several years ago.
