Proposed Bike Path Developed by Local Group
The City of Galesburg soon will have a proposed bicycle path encompassing a good portion of the City.

The Cyclists of Galesburg organization -- fronted by 7th Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin -- approved the proposed path Tuesday night. Karlin says it will next go to the city administration, whom he expects will tweak it before giving it to the full council for approval.

Karlin says this is different than a plan for a bike path developed 15 years ago by the city.

"The bike plan that they had was really kind of a recreational plan, also a historic type plan," Karlin said. "You can see that the bike route that we have here now as well, currently, that's marked out by the signs is that way."

"As we talked about it as a group we thought about a bike route as a commuter type, transportation plan."

The group also made plans for a bike ride encompassing that route, to be held next Friday, July 6th, to coincide with First Fridays on Seminary Street.

A ride encompassing the area's three lakes -- Storey, Rice, and Bracken -- will be held in late-September, with proceeds going toward the local match needed for a proposed extension of the bike path around Lake Storey.
