Mayor Reflects on Last Summer's Kiwanis Park Shooting
Galesburg's mayor has seen a greater initiative from families, religious groups, and other organizations to mentor the city's youth since last summer's fatal shooting at Kiwanis Park.

Following 21-year-old Jamell Ware's death a year ago Saturday, Mayor Sal Garza tells WGIL the community has since stepped up it's engagement against violence.

"This young man isn't forgotten," Garza said. "There's a great number of people in this community that have risen to the occasion in terms of educating others on how to treat our young people safer."

"Again, it is no consolation, in terms of the loss of this loved one-- and human life in general-- but this person hasn't been forgotten."

Like any similar-sized city, Garza says there's challenges Galesburg faces. He says the violence will never be eliminated. But, the mayor says it's the community's responsibility as a whole to educate the youth on managing particular issues.

47-year-old Overton Fisher of Chicago is charged with killing Ware last year. He's scheduled for a court appearance Monday.
