Knoxville to Pursue Community Energy Source
Just a few months after switching suppliers, the Knoxville City Council is now pursuing a new kind of electricity agreement with it's latest agent.

In February, alderman voted to drop Integry's for a one year deal with Ameren Energy Marketing. Monday night the council agreed to put a question on the general action ballot regarding a Municipal Aggregation Plan with Ameren.

Acting Mayor Bob Johnson says the plan spans two years, and with a fixed rate that will save money.

"My understanding is you're locked in for two years at the same rate, so it doesn't go up," Johnson said. "It stays for two years at that rate."

City attorney Rob McCoy says that's beneficial to Ameren because it hooks in every Knoxville resident and business.

"The whole theory is you're going to get locked in for a number years at hopefully a better rate because you're going to have the negotiating power of the whole town instead of individuals making their own decisions," McCoy said.

McCoy says also individuals can opt out any time during the length of the contract. If November's referendum question nets more than fifty-percent 'yes' for the energy plan, then a public hearing and another proposed ordinance would follow.

In other news, alderman approved over seven-thousand dollars in restoration work to the public library Monday night. This includes tuck-pointing and the installation of new drains.
