Noted Scientist Receives Knox Honorary Degree
A scientist noted for his environmental studies was one of three to receive honorary degrees during this past weekend's Knox College commencement.

Purdue University Physical Chemistry Professor Joseph Francisco was one of those receiving honorary degrees from Knox. He's known for research into how the atmosphere breaks down pollutants, therefore giving a greater understanding of how acid rain forms.

Knox Chemistry professor Mary Crawford says Francisco's work has proven valuable and well-recognized.

"Dr. Francisco is an internationally recognized expert in the field of atmospheric chemistry and chemical physics," she said. "His efforts have resulted in over 400 peer-reviewed publications , nine book chapters and a co-authored textbook entitled 'Chemical Kinetics and Dynamics.'"

College officials say Francisco's work also looks at how man-made materials have affected the atmosphere and more specifically, the ozone layer.

Lyric Opera of Chicago Director Sir Andrew Davis also received an honorary degree, as did the commencement speaker, war crime prosecutor, Brigadier General Mark Martins.
