Architect Reveals KHS Design Concepts
The architect charged with designing a new $31.5 million dollar Knoxville High School may have come up with the best of both worlds when it comes to a student commons area.

Bloomington-based BLDD presented multiple design concepts for both the layout and the surrounding exterior area to the District-202 school board Tuesday night.

One exciting option, Superintendent Steve Wilder tells WGIL, is to combine both a dining area and performance hall.

"We believe that BLDD came up with a very innovative idea that would allow us to use that commons area in a very effective way for student performances as well," Wilder said. "And in working with the board members, Mr. (John) Putnam came up with the idea that would allow us to make the stage that would be used for student performances to be used in one of our gyms as well."

Wilder says a common lunch period could be utilized with the space, along with an independent study area. He says the concept is beneficial to smaller and rural schools like in Knoxville.

According to Wilder, the board also mulled over ideas to retain or add a new weight room. He says it's possible a wellness area could be built inside the existing Jensen Gym-- the only structure planned to remain in tact.

BLDD and district officials will further discuss the concepts and more detailed artist renderings are to come.
