Reaction to Lisa Madigan Not Running for Governor
Lisa Madigan likes her job as attorney general and likes spending time with her family, and at least one longtime political watcher is taking her word for it. Madigan, a Democrat who has served a term in the Illinois Senate and two as attorney general, has decided to run for re-election rather than for governor or U. S. Senate.

"She's done a very good job as attorney general, using it as a forum to be, essentially, the people's lawyer," says Kent Redfield, a political science professor at the University of Illinois at Springfield . Redfield admits to being surprised by the decision.

Bob Rich, director of the Institute for Government and Public Affairs, agrees that she has built up a lot of equity. "She's an excellent speaker and has some charisma to her, and it doesn't hurt that her last name is Madigan." Her father is Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan (D-Chicago), the state Democratic Party chairman.

House Minority Leader Tom Cross (R-Oswego) says the Republicans are hoping to re-claim the governor's office by accusing the Democrats of financial mismanagement: "They've got some huge issues, politically, with the amount of money they've been spending -- six years of spending money we didn't have," he said.
